Step by step
Arrival at the workplace
Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment. Please have your insurance card and referral form ready.
- When you arrive at our office, please check in at the front desk.
- You will be asked to complete an informed consent form in Czech or English; for minors, the consent form must be completed by a legal guardian (we examine cooperative patients, including children aged 6 and older, who may undergo the examination accompanied by their parents).
- In the preparation room, you will be asked to remove your clothing to ensure that no magnetic materials are present during the MRI scan.
- We recommend bringing a change of clothes that does not contain any metal parts, zippers, clips, embellishments, or buttons. Cotton clothing is best (a long-sleeved, loose-fitting T-shirt and sweatpants or leggings).
- You must also remove your glasses, hearing aids, dentures, prosthetic devices, bra, hairpins, watch, wig, coins, keys, credit cards, cell phones, jewelry, and other items.
The examination itself
You will be placed on a movable table and positioned inside the MRI scanner. The exam takes 15–40 minutes.
- To protect your hearing, you will be provided with headphones or earplugs.
- The examination room is supplied with fresh air, and throughout the examination you will communicate with the staff using a signaling device—a small balloon held in your hand.
- Throughout the examination, you will be under the direct supervision of the radiology technician performing the procedure.
- It is important to get comfortable and remain still during the examination.
- The examination may also involve the intravenous administration of a contrast agent—a very small amount is administered, and we will monitor you throughout the procedure.
FAQ
Answers to frequently asked questions about MRI scans.
How should I prepare for the examination?
Most tests do not require any special preparation.
Please arrive for your head and brain examination without any makeup—no mascara, foundation, powder, hair gel, etc.
What should I bring with me?
A referral from your doctor, your insurance card, and any previous test results (CDs, reports). We recommend bringing a loose-fitting, long-sleeved cotton T-shirt and sweatpants or leggings to change into. Both should be free of metal fasteners.
Can I eat and drink before the exam?
Yes, unless you've been told otherwise.
Is the exam painful?
No. The exam is completely painless; it just requires you to remain still during the imaging.
What if I have claustrophobia?
The staff will assist you and explain everything. We will remain in constant contact with you throughout the examination. You can choose whether you wish to communicate with the staff between the different parts of the examination. If you are anxious about the examination, it is advisable to ask your referring physician to prescribe anti-anxiety medication to help you cope with the examination.
Can I have an examination even though I have a metal implant?
You may undergo the examination with a metal implant either more than 6 weeks after implantation or if you can provide proof of MRI compatibility. However, there may be situations in which the examination is not safe - for example, if there is a metal fragment in the eye. Please provide accurate information on the safety questionnaire.
